Uncovering Hidden Suicidal Ideation in a Primary Care Setting

Speaker: Shawn Christopher Shea, M.D.
Length: One and One-Half Hours

Objectives:

  1. Be able to describe the risk factors associated with suicide and their relation to predicting suicide.
  2. Be able to utilize the following validity techniques as they relate to eliciting suicidal ideation: the behavioral incident, gentle assumption, symptom amplification, denial of the specific, and normalization.
  3. Be able to describe and utilize an innovative interview strategy for eliciting suicidal ideation, the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE Approach) as adapted to a busy primary care setting.
